Time – Time Warner announced that it will spin off its magazine unit into a separate, publicly traded company by the end of the year. Investors had come to see the magazine business as a drag on revenues and profits and want to focus on the company’s TV networks. Analysts have estimated that the Time division is worth around $2.5 billion. Time CEO Laura Lang plans to step down after a successor has been named. The parent company will continue to be known as Time Warner, keeping Time in its name despite the spin-off. Founded in 1923, Time has the world’s largest circulation for a weekly news magazine, and has a readership of 25 million.
Forbes – Eric Savitz, who covers the tech industry for Forbes and who has been in journalism for nearly three decades, has resigned to accept a position in public relations. Eric joined Forbes as San Francisco bureau chief in December 2010. Prior to this, he had a long career at Barron’s where he wrote the Tech Trader Daily blog. There’s no word on his replacement yet. Forbes has a circulation of more than 900K readers per month.
Wired – Joe Brown has resigned from his position as editor in chief of Gizmodo, beginning on March 18. He had been with the publication since August 2010. He is set to join Wired as New York editor, beginning March 25. A replacement has not yet been named at Gizmodo. Wired and Wired.com reach more than 14 million readers each month.
AllThingsDigital – Senior Editor, Tricia Duryee has left her position at AllThingsD covering ecommerce and gaming. She had been with the site since December 2010. Prior to this, she was an editor at MocoNews.net covering wireless and mobile content for three years. At this time, Tricia is focused on taking time off to spend with family. Her replacement has not yet been named. AllThingsD.com receives more than 1.2 million unique visitors per month.
GigaOM – Jordan Novet joined GigaOM as a staff writer covering cloud computing. He previously served as a business reporter for The Bulletin in Bend, Oregon. GigaOM receives 4 million visitors per month.
PCWorld – Michael Brown has joined PCWorld as a senior editor. He continues to serve as a technology freelance writer. He previously served as the reviews editor for Maximum PC, Maximum Tech and MaximumPC.com. PCWorld has a circulation of more than 300K readers per month.
