Welcome to PR Vibes, created by Calysto Communications to provide you with insight into the thought leaders, publications and events in mobile, wireless and telecom technologies.

Today, we visit with The 451 Group’s Chairman and CEO, Martin McCarthy, who led the acquisition of Yankee Group in January, 2013. In an exclusive briefing, McCarthy shares news about the launch of the 451 Research Mobility Practice, which Yankee Group is now a part of, as well as added features and functionality to 451 Research. Enjoy!

Tell us about the changes at 451 Research and how they affect Yankee Group.

We are excited to announce that today we are enhancing our products in a number of ways. Specifically, we are:

  • Introducing 14 research ‘channels’ that align our content more closely with the technology landscape.
  • Fully integrating Yankee Group into 451 Research and introducing two new channels of content: Enterprise Mobility and Mobile Telecom.
  • Launching a new Research Dashboard that enables clients to easily browse our research in the channels that best align with our clients’ interests.

Yankee Group has a long history as the thought leader covering the mobile and communications industries. Increasingly, 451 Research clients have been asking questions about mobility and enterprise technology. When The 451 Group acquired Yankee Group last year, we did so because we saw an opportunity to significantly extend The 451 Group’s focus on the mobility market within the evolution of the digital infrastructure eco-system.

Since the acquisition, 451 Research and Yankee Group have worked in close collaboration on how we could best support our clients through an integrated research team and product experience.  And now, as we roll out an enhanced product experience, we are pleased to announce that Yankee Group will be the driving power behind 451 Research’s new Mobility Practice, consisting of two new 451 Research channels, Enterprise Mobility and Mobile Telecom.  With one of the largest integrated market research teams dedicated to mobile technology use in the enterprise, the 451 Research Mobility team is in a unique position to help our clients make informed decisions to succeed in today’s hyper-connected world.

What benefits will clients see from the new 451 Research Mobility Practice?

The combined, new 451 Research Mobility team, expands upon Yankee Group’s coverage to deliver deeper insight into the opportunities and challenges surrounding the emerging tools and service-enabling strategies that drive enterprise mobility and the most important innovations in wireless network infrastructure, connected devices and mobile devices.  Closer collaboration with the over 100 analysts in the combined 451 Research team, will enable a broader view of the market and allow us to better serve our clients.

We have always recognized the importance of telecom operators in the digital infrastructure eco-system and now, with the 451 Research Mobility Practice, we are in a unique position to help operators succeed.  Between Yankee Group’s expertise in mobile network infrastructure, network IT, broadband and operator strategies, along with the cloud and data centers expertise of 451 Research, our clients will have access to a more holistic view of the market.

How is research now structured?

Our Market Insight product remains our clients’ radar into the business of IT innovation, with concise reports across all our coverage areas, reflecting our belief that our clients need to understand the market across technology areas.  And as of today, it will now include an additional 225 reports from our new Mobility team.

We are also introducing Technology & Business Insight reports. These longer-format reports, as well as our data products, are thematically bundled within each of our new 14 research channels, reflecting our edge-to-core research coverage:

  • Datacenter Technologies
  • Storage
  • Enterprise Platforms & Infrastructure Software
  • Networking
  • Information Security
  • Data Platforms & Analytics
  • Development, DevOps & Middleware
  • Social Business Applications
  • Service Providers
  • Cloud & IT Service Markets
  • European Services
  • Multi-tenant Datacenters
  • Mobile Telecom
  • Enterprise Mobility

The last two channels will be powered by our new Mobility team.

What doesn’t change?

For current Yankee clients, there will be no disruption to their services.  They can choose to remain on their existing Yankee research experience, but have the option to migrate to a more robust solution on the 451 Research platform that gives them all the content they have access to today, with an additional set of concise reports covering all aspects of digital infrastructure.  We will continue to support all existing Yankee Group deliverables, including the Mobile Advisory and Planning Services (MAPS) product family.   With the addition of Chris Hazelton, the Yankee Group analyst team remains intact and we are making strategic investments into building an even more comprehensive Mobility practice.  Finally, data products will continue to be comprehensive, and we will have the opportunity to enhance them as the Yankee Group data team will now become part of the 50+ person 451 Research data team.

What differentiates the coverage 451 Research provides?

One of the things that make us different is that we cover the smaller companies — startups and emerging companies — as well as the very large and established players. Some firms only focus on big suppliers, which means they may miss the important things that the emerging players are doing.   Moreover, 451 Research covers the full lifecycle of technology innovation – from investment to creation to consumption, which provides our clients with a unique view of the market.

By external benchmarks, 451 Research produces the third largest volume of research reports in the industry and also publishes more than 50 million data points annually.  We touch more than 16,000 enterprises annually.  We have more than 100 analysts and can look at the industry in a very holistic fashion.

How does research align with the cycle of innovation?

If you look at the cycle of innovation, you have people that invest and finance technology, organizations that build products and deliver services, and then you’ve got customers that consume them. We cover the complete cycle.

We cover the investment community, including tracking and analyzing M&A in the sector. We do that with approximately 2,000 companies each year.

Obviously, we track technology vendor and service providers themselves after the investment. How are they doing, what is their uniqueness in the marketplace, who are their customers? Basically, we try to understand what’s happening at the company level, not only at the industry-wide level.

And then, underneath is in-depth quantitative data research to help us understand the customer. We have our own research panels and our own user groups, including our ChangeWave research panel of early adopters. We survey and interview them on a regular basis to understand their roadmaps and spending levels. We can put a level of quantitative rigor around the research we do that we believe is unparalleled in the market.

Will you keep any of the Yankee Group branding or will that go away?

We are honored to be the steward of the Yankee Group brand heritage, and specifically the steward of its mobility and telecom intellectual capital.  You will see the Yankee brand appear alongside 451 Research’s in all our Mobility and Telecom quantitative and qualitative analysis going forward.
