Calysto Overview

TV everywhere apps and multiscreen viewing, premium content, live streaming production, video ad experiences and encoding for multiple screens were this year’s top topics at the annual Streaming Media East conference held at the New York Hilton Midtown. The Streaming Media events’ singular focus on online video business models and technology has proved to be a successful formula as the show has been around for 17 years.

This year, the New York City event had approximately 2,100 attendees, with the demographic breakdown typically including broadcasters, service providers, media owners, online marketers and agencies, educators, application developers and the creatives.

Program speakers were cable operators and broadcasters from companies such as Netflix, Comcast, Verizon, NBC Universal, Viacom, CBS Interactive, WWE, A+E Networks, EPIX, YouTube, CNN, FOX News Digital, BBC, AOL/Huffington Post, Google, and Yahoo, with keynotes coming from Comcast, Verizon, Twitch, and the NBC Sports Group.

The two-day conference program had more than 40 sessions and workshops on topics ranging from “4K Streaming Costs and QoS” to “OTT Services and Their Effect on the Bundled TV Model.”

As part of this event, the Content Delivery Summit took place the day before and gave carriers, telcos, ISPs, and premium content owners an opportunity for a closer look at content delivery networks technology and platforms and hear about deployments to date.

The Streaming Media East exhibit hall again had a pavilion for streaming devices, where attendees could get their hands on more than 34 over-the-top (OTT) video devices and content platforms from Amazon, Apple, ESPN, Netflix, Hulu, Google, HBO, Sony, Samsung, Vshowtime, izio, Roku, Redbox, Vudu, Microsoft, TiVo and many more. Also on display were Smart TVs from Samsung, Vizio, Sony, and LG.

Wrap Up

Although the primary source of media coverage for Streaming Media East is the media property that produces these events, StreamingMedia.com, those presenting and exhibiting obtain good coverage on the website. The Streaming Media East /Content Delivery Summit remains a good combo event for lead generation, networking and speaking opportunities for those in the online video ecosystem.
