Calysto Overview
CommunicAsia focuses on the full spread of convergent technologies and applications from industry leaders intended to enhance enterprises' mobility and users' lifestyles. EnterpriseIT caters to enterprises across all industries keen to have the right enterprise solutions to meet the evolving needs of their businesses. BroadcastAsia showcases digital multimedia and entertainment technologies, encompassing TV/radio broadcasting, film/motion picture, production/post-production and multi-platform streaming.
The combined CommunicAsia2010, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia2010 events saw more overseas visitors this year, with visitors from key Asia Pacific markets like China, India, Japan and Korea all seeing double-digit growth from a year ago. Overseas attendees from 100 countries and regions made up 56 percent of those who participated; up from 49 percent last year.
“I am looking for some software and managed to meet all the people I needed to within a short period of time, as all the industry people are here,” said one attendee. “It is very productive for me. I saw the demonstrations and spoke to a few key people. I visit four to five events a year in Dubai, Africa and other countries. I think CommunicAsia is very well organized. Well-done! This visit has given me a good overview of the whole marketplace. I will visit the exhibition again next year."
Around 1,306 companies from 52 countries/regions exhibited at CommunicAsia/ EntepriseIT2010, but that number jumps to nearly 2,000 if you add in the BroadcastAsia exhibitors. Following the same practice as other shows, CommunicAsia organizers placed exhibitors in “technology clusters” in the exhibit halls. Some of the clusters included FTTx, Sustainable ICT, 3.5G/LTE/4G, IPTV, Mobile Broadband, Navigation and Location-based Services and Satellite.
We heard reports that energy was high and traffic in the exhibit hall was good. At times, the show floor was downright packed, especially when it was show time at booths such as LG and CBOSS. As one reporter put it, “Is there anyone in the telecom world that doesn't know the CBOSS name? The dancing girls strategy is an old one, but yet again it caused some serious crowd management issues along the main walkway every 30 minutes or so when the music was cranked up to 11 and the dancers hit the stage.”
"CommunicAsia2010 enabled us to meet with over 300 potential and existing customers who hail from regions of Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East,” said one exhibitor. “This is a significant increase of more than 40% compared to around 200 meetings we had at the 2009 show. Our participation at CommunicAsia2010 has been extremely worthwhile, and we are looking forward to [returning] again next year."
ZTE sported one of the most prominent booths on the show floor and often drew large crowds. Ericsson created a splash with its “End-to-Endless” IPTV campaign. First-time CommunicAsia exhibitor Skype, which displayed a prominent cloud motif on its booth, drew lots of visitors as well.
The exhibit floor hosted 24 international group pavilions that showcased their home-grown innovations. First-time participants included Bangladesh Pavilion, a new group led by India’s Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) and another led by Korea’s Gwangju Info & Culture Industry Promotion Agency (GITCT).
According to organizers, more than 235 product launches occurred at CommunicAsia2010. Inmarsat launched its first global handheld service, the IsatPhone Pro. ZTE unveiled the ZXY10 T700, the first integrated HD videoconferencing terminal. Ephone International showcased its EPI Life phone with a built-in electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement function linked to a 24-hour health concierge service, and Microtech System demonstrated an external battery pack for the iPhone called the Boom Boom. It provides extra usage time and vibrates when users listen to music or play games.
There were many other announcements as well. At a press conference, representatives from ZTE boasted that the company replaced Alcatel-Lucent as the global No. 2 fixed broadband infrastructure vendor, capturing 16.5 percent of the market and trailing only Huawei with its 22.6 percent share of the market. Yahoo! announced it has teamed with Alcatel to release a phone dubbed the Alcatel One Touch, with bundled Yahoo! content and software.
One attendee said he hasn’t missed CommunicAsia since 2004 and finds it a good platform to meet friends from different countries. He said he made contact with some new Chinese & Korean companies this year and found the Singapore Pavilion especially interesting. “I will be attending the exhibition again next year and will bring some customers," he said.
The conference portion of the event, the CommunicAsia2010 Summit, drew more than 650 attendees. This year the conference organizers included more than 10 sessions and introduced four new forums: Mobile Value Added Services, Network Security, Getting in on the Cloud and Converged Device Management. Also, there were two new workshops this year on Mobile Marketing & Profitability and New Revenue Opportunities with "Green."
The sessions covered the developments in the ICT industry. They included case studies, interactive round table discussions and presentations by experts.
Josh Silverman, CEO of Skype, presented his vision on The Future of Communications – sort of. We heard from several sources that Silverman’s keynote speech was a disappointment, as it was more of a sales pitch than a talk about the future of communications, his topic on the agenda.
“In his maiden speech in Asia/Pacific, silver-tongued Silverman dwelt more on Skype's achievements, product launches, forthcoming plans, and claims of ‘CD-quality voice’ than the rapidly changing communications/ICT (information and communications technology) landscape,” said one journalist. “While his half-hour address included namechecks for Skype's TV set and PC partners, the number of registered users (though not active users), and some hard-to-prove claims about the level of Skype video traffic on international networks, the ‘visionary address’ that was promised was nowhere to be seen.”
CommunicAsia remains the anchor tradeshow for the Southeast Asia region—for exhibiting, the conference and as a media event. The event drew lots of journalists, especially from the Asia Pacific region, and provided lots of networking opportunities at hospitality suites.
Next year’s CommunicAsia event will be June 21-24, 2011 at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
